Volunteer Program
The History of Hospice Care
Hospice care, as we know it today, actually originated from the dedicated efforts of compassionate volunteers. Their generous services formed the backbone of early hospice care, providing support and improving the quality of life for those who needed it most. Today, volunteers remain at the heart of our hospice care, offering companionship and embodying the compassion-based values that define our service.
Companionship:
An Essential Component of Our Care
Our volunteers play an essential role in supporting our patients through kindhearted company and companionship. Our volunteers may engage in a range of activities with each patient, such as chatting, coloring, or listening to soothing music. Sometimes, simply sitting in silence, giving eye contact, or holding a hand can make all the difference. Our volunteer coordinator works closely with our interdisciplinary team to determine the best avenue of non-clinical care for each individual, to maximize the overall sense of comfort and companionship for each patient.
Volunteering with patients in hospice care is more than a simple visit—it’s providing heartfelt company and creating a sense of community for those who truly need it most. Even the smallest of gestures can have a profound impact, whether it’s taking the time to listen to someone’s life story or simply holding their hand in silence, moments like these that show just how much we can make a difference in someone’s life. Given the significance of this experience, I want to help others connect with patients, learn about their stories, and provide a comforting voice at the time when it is needed most.
